Top Bathroom Design Tips

You would think designing a bathroom would be simple. They’re small with relatively few surfaces to think about in comparison to larger rooms. However, once you start thinking about redesigning a bathroom that illusion immediately falls apart. The truth is that every bathroom contains an absolute minimum of three surface textures with very few exceptions, and all of them have to withstand daily use as well as exposure to water, steam, and heat.

Top Bathroom Design Tips

Fortunately, we do have a few design tips that have been gleaned from multiple sources, including the Spruce, to help make the entire process easier.

Opt for Easy-to-Clean Materials

Your bathroom might be beautiful when you first design it, but you will come to hate every inch of it if it isn’t easy to clean. Luckily, there a number of stone materials for bathrooms that make it easy to create a beautiful space that can be easily wiped down. Talk to your local sintered stone supplier to learn more about the wide variety of textures and patterns available to you.

Prioritize Lighting

Lighting is crucial for bathrooms for three reasons.

  • It can help to set the mood for relaxing spa nights.
  • It can help to make a small space feel larger.
  • It makes it easier to see what your makeup, hair, etc. look like in natural light.

As a result, you’ll generally need two to three different types of lights. All of them should be rated for damp or moist areas for safety purposes, but you can play with design and intensity to get the look you want.

For example, you might place bright, recessed lighting over your shower and vanity. This makes it easy to shave, put on makeup, and do all of the other normal parts of your routine. In addition, you may want to place a nice chandelier over your bathtub if you have one. With the help of a dimmer switch, you can make your bathroom feel luxuriously relaxing. Then, last but not least, an upward-facing sconce on either side of the vanity can be used to draw the eye up, giving the impression of a larger space.

Keep it Simple

Bathrooms have a lot of pieces in a relatively small space already. You don’t want to make your bathroom feel any more cluttered than it has to be. For that reason, it is usually best to keep your design elements simple. Many designers encourage their clients to limit the number of colors used in favor of different textures to that end. If you are looking for a more old-fashioned elegance, you can always incorporate beautiful mirrors and elegant light fixtures to create that impression.

Add Built-In Storage

Storage is always a challenge in bathrooms, but the last thing you want to do is have too many pieces sticking out from the wall. This can easily make a bathroom feel cramped. Instead, if your budget allows, try building recessed storage. A hair product niche in your shower or a tasteful, recessed shelf over your vanity can help to expand your storage options without the addition of cabinetry.

Embrace Mirrors and Reflective Surfaces

Given that many bathrooms tend to be relatively small in comparison to the homes they are in, there are few cases where you don’t want to give the impression that the space is larger. Luckily, there are multiple ways to create that illusion. Upward lighting is one, but reflective surfaces can be even more effective. By adding a couple of mirrors or using a high gloss sintered stone in your shower, you can make your bathroom feel much more open.
